サーメットの特徴

切削工具に使われる材質で、弊社でも加工・販売しているサーメットですが、一体どんな素材なのか、ご紹介したいと思います。

まずサーメットと名付けられた由来ですが、セラミック（ceramic)のような硬さとメタル(metal)のような粘り強さを合わせ持った材質という意味で、2つの言葉を合わせて名付けられました。

主成分はTiC（炭化チタン）結合剤にNi（ニッケル）を使用しています。

そこにMo（モリブテン）や窒化チタン（TiN）を加えて靭性を向上させたTiC-TiN-Mo-Niが現在のサーメットの主流となっています。

 

サーメットの特徴

超硬合金とセラミックの中間のような性質で、以下のような良い特徴があります。

・硬度の高さ

超硬合金よりも硬く、超硬合金では加工しづらい硬度の高い難削材の加工にも使用できます。

・優れた耐熱性

耐熱性に優れるサーメットは、切削時に発生する熱による硬度低下が少ないため高速切削が可能です。

・耐溶着性

サーメットは鉄との親和性が低いため、切削時の構成刃先が出来づらいという特徴があります。そのため構成刃先の発生しやすい鋼の高速切削も可能です。

上記のようにサーメットには様々な良い特徴があり、質の高い加工を安定して行うことができます。

しかし、デメリットもあります。

・靭性が低く、衝撃に弱い

靭性においては超硬合金より低く、衝撃で欠けやすいという特徴があるので、切削条件には気をつけなければいけません。

・熱伝導率が低く熱容量も小さい

サーメットは、刃先に熱がこもりやすく、空転時の急冷によりカケ（熱亀裂）が生じてしまうことがあります。これを回避するためには乾式切削をおすすめします。

 

まとめ

今回説明してきたようにサーメットは上手に使えばとても優れた材質です。しかし、間違った知識で使用してしまうと脆くてカケやすい扱いづらい工具となってしまいます。

切削加工は、被削材に合った刃物の材質・切削条件で、加工を行うことが重要です。

効率的で質の高い加工を行うためにも、用途に適した切削工具を選定・使用することが大事です。
